Abstract

In the present study it was found that resin yield increased with the increase in diameter class D4 (20-22.5cm) to Dl (27.5-30cm) and the group of blaze width from Bl (8, 10, 12 and 14cm) to B4 (14, 16, 18 and 20cm). The resin yield also increase as blaze width increased within blaze group itself. The tree in diameter class D4 (20-22.5cm) yielded resin less than 2.0 kg per season so it is not feasible to commercially tap the trees of this diameter class. The trees of other three diameter classes viz. D3 (22.5-25cm), D2 (25-27.5cm) and Dl (27.5-30cm) are feasible for commercial resin tapping because they yielded more than 2.0 kg of resin per season. The maximum resin yield was obtained in the month of May (hottest) and the lowest in the month of October (coldest). The eight month tapping period showed the average resin yield of 2.30 kg per tree per season.

Abstract

The oleoresin is an important forest produce of pine forests in the world. The conventional rill method of tapping leads to the destruction of some wood and the production of poor quality oleoresin. The improved tapping technique i.e. borehole method was used by applying 10% ethephon and 20% H SO as a stimulant. The mean oleoresin yield of low, 2 4 medium and high resin yielders was 827.24, 1486 and 2594.8 g/season respectively. The highest oleoresin yield was recorded in R-11 high resin yielder (3975 g/season) and lowest oleoresin yield was found in R-20 low resin yielder (465 g/season). The highest oleoresin yield of 2.24 kg was recorded in 40-45 (D ) diameter class. The oleoresin yield differed 3 significantly among the different boreholes drilled at different time interval. The maximum oleoresin yield of 684.5 g/hole/tree was obtained from first (B ) borehole (March to October) and minimum oleoresin yield (523.4 g/hole/tree) 1 was recorded in B (May-October).

Abstract

Several granite plutons occur in the Great and Lesser Himalaya in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir. These granites assume batholithic to sub-batholithic dimensions and are composed of quartz, orthoclase, microcline, plagioclase, muscovite, biotite, hornblende and tourmaline besides epidote, apatite, futile, zircon, magnetite, ilmenite and sphene as accessories. These granites are peraluminous as the molar proportions of Al₂O₃ is greater than the molar proportions of (K₂O+Na₂O+CaO). High molar AI₂O₃/ (K₂O+Na₂O+CaO) ratios and normative corundum are indicative of the generation of these granites due to partial fusion of crustal materials.

Abstract

The present investigation entitled 'Temporal Stability analysis of resin yield of natural regenerated Chir pine (Pinus roxburghii Sargent) in Himachal Pradesh.' was carried out during the year 2012-13 with the aim to identify the stable diameter classes with respect to resin yield obtained from Pinus roxburghii. Secondary data on resin yield for 145 trees for seven years w.e.f. year 2005 to year 2011 were taken from the Department of Forest Products, Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan, Himachal Pradesh. The tree set of 145 trees remain same for all the years. These trees were divided into seven diameter classes i.e. 30-35 cm, 35-40 cm, 40-45 cm, 45-50 cm, 50-55 cm, 55-60 cm and 60-65 cm depending upon the variability among data. Two stability models viz. Finlay and Wilkinson's model (1963) and Eberhart and Russell's model (1966) were used to identify the stable diameter class for the production of resin. Pooled analysis of variance was performed to detect the presence of diameter class (D) × year (Y) interaction. The effects due to Y, D and D × Y interaction were found to be significant. Finlay and Wilkinson's model suggested that the diameter class 40-45 cm had the mean (D) greater than the overall mean and regression coefficient bi was nearly equal to one. Eberhart and Russel's model indicated that the diameter class 40-45 cm had (0.35) which 2 was greater than zero, regression coefficient bi (0.872) which was nearly equal to one and low (s d). Thus, diameter i class 40-45 cm was identified as stable diameter class with respect to resin yield obtained from Pinus roxburghii. Therefore, it may be concluded that diameter class 40-45 cm was most stable for resin yield.
